What happens if you stop training for 3 months?

7th May 2023

In a study conducted in 2007, researchers examined what happens when participants stopped strength training for 3 months, after completing a 10 week training program.

They found that people lost just under 6% of their concentric muscle strength, which was equivalent to what they gained in the first 5weeks of training. Their strength scores were still much higher than their starting levels before the training program. Participants also saw some loss of muscle mass although this wasn’t significant.

Based on these findings, the researchers estimated that after 3 months of no training, it will take you about 5 weeks to regain any losses… in other words, lost strength is easier to get back than strength you never had!
