Contrast loading is a strength training technique that alternates between heavy and light loads during a workout set. It combines near-maximal weightlifting exercises with lower-resistance, explosive movements. For example, an athlete might do a heavy squat followed by a set of jump squats.
The purpose of contrast loading is to enhance both maximal strength and power.
