Active recovery: movement is medicine for your muscles

Active recovery refers to low-intensity exercise performed after intense physical activity, aimed at helping muscles recover. Unlike complete rest, active recovery promotes movement, such as light jogging, cycling, or stretching, to enhance circulation and aid in the removal of lactic acid, a byproduct of intense exercise that contributes to muscle soreness.


By improving blood flow, active recovery helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to fatigued muscles, accelerating the repair process and reducing inflammation. This method also reduces muscle stiffness, improves range of motion, and prevents delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), which can appear 24-48 hours after a workout.

In addition, active recovery aids mental recovery by allowing individuals to stay engaged without overexertion. Overall, it is an effective strategy to boost recovery while maintaining fitness levels, ultimately allowing for quicker return to intense training.
