What is Diabetes?

10th June 2024

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition characterized by high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. It occurs when the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or can't effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps glucose enter the cells to be used for energy.

There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It usually develops in childhood or adolescence and requires lifelong insulin therapy. Type 2 diabetes is more common and typically develops in adults. It is often linked to obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. In Type 2 diabetes, the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough of it.

Managing diabetes involves lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, regular physical activity, monitoring blood sugar levels, and, in some cases, medication or insulin therapy. Effective management can prevent complications and lead to a healthy, active life.
