Effects of aging on muscle mass

29th May 2023

Many studies have shown that as people age they lose muscle mass… HOWEVER! These studies are generally conducted on inactive people.

In a study by Wroblewski et al (2011), they showed people who had taken part in sports throughout their lives saw no more significant difference in muscle mass for 70year olds compared to 40year olds.

This study indicates that if you keep training and exercising, you can not only slow the loss of muscle, but you can likely prevent the loss all together. (Note that this study didn’t have any participants over the age of 80 though).

There is a general decline in performance with age, and this decline becomes a lot steeper around the age of 75-80.
