Use Habit Stacking to Help with your New Goals

25th December 2023

Habit stacking involves integrating new behaviours into established routines. By pairing a desired habit with an existing one, you can leverage the power of routine to create positive change. This method capitalises on the brain’s efficiency in automating repeated actions, making it easier to adopt new habits seamlessly.

For instance, if you aim to start attending the gym after work, habit stacking suggests pairing it with an existing habit like changing shoes – so now when you kick your work shoes off you immediately put your trainers on. The association between trainers and heading to the gym creates a mental link, facilitating the formation of a consistent habit.

Habit stacking simplifies behaviour change by eliminating the need to carve out separate time for remembering new activities. This approach not only enhances efficiency but also minimises the resistance often associated with breaking established routines. Whether it’s exercise, mindfulness, or learning a new skill, habit stacking is a practical strategy for cultivating positive habits amid the demands of a busy lifestyle.
