Top 5 Foods to Eat Before a Workout for Optimal Energy and Performance

21st October 2024

Eating the right foods before a workout can enhance performance and provide sustained energy. Here are some of the best foods to eat before exercising:

  • Bananas: They're a great source of fast-digesting carbohydrates, which provide quick energy to fuel your workout. Bananas are also rich in potassium, which helps maintain proper muscle function and prevent cramps.

  • Oats: Oats are packed with slow-digesting carbohydrates that provide a steady release of energy, perfect for longer workouts. They also have fibre, which keeps blood sugar levels stable, preventing energy crashes.

  • Greek Yogurt with Berries: Greek yogurt is rich in protein, which aids in muscle repair and recovery. Berries, like blueberries or strawberries, offer antioxidants to reduce exercise-induced oxidative stress and provide quick-digesting carbs for immediate energy.

  • Whole Grain Toast with Peanut Butter: Whole grain toast offers complex carbs for lasting energy, while peanut butter adds healthy fats and protein. This combo gives sustained energy and helps you feel full without weighing you down.

  • Chicken and Brown Rice: This is a well-rounded option for those working out later in the day. Chicken provides lean protein to support muscle growth and recovery, while brown rice offers complex carbs that slowly release energy over time.

Next week I’ll talk about some ideas for mid-workout snacks. Plus don’t forget we have a special Free Sports Nutrition Health Hub Talk on the 12th November 7pm.
